Your painting contractor should be able to tell you which premium products they use, and why. High-end materials and products perform better, look nicer, and last longer - if your contractor uses low-end options to drive your cost down, they’re not doing you any favors.  When reviewing your proposal make sure a specific product is listed, not just a paint manufacturer.  Every manufacturer has contractor grade options.
Second: all the tricks of the trade in regard to "cheating" customers is for hustlers and cheaters and NOT established businesses. At the end of the project the job should come out looking professionally painted as specified in the contract. A selected color that takes multiple coats that was not calculated by the contractor should cost more money. It's not the fault of the painter.
Harvey's House Painting recently painted the exterior of our home. Rich, the owner was very professional and gave me a great bid which included quality paint from Sherwin Williams. I was pleased with the price as well as the work that was done by his crew. I am very specific with details and Rich made sure that his crew came back the last day to complete all touch up areas that I needed and to make sure everything was cleaned up properly around the home. He even included additional dry rot repair for no extra charge. I would highly recommend Harvey's House Painting for all your painting needs.
Consider purchasing supplies personally to save money. Ask the painter for a bid that separates labor and materials. Then explain that you'll purchase the materials and ask for a list of exactly what will be needed to complete the job. Caulking, for example, is an extra supply commonly used to fill any cracks or damaged areas in your walls -- and one that might be overlooked in an incomplete list.
I hired this person because he was listed on Angie's List. This man claimed he took and passed his contractor's license test after he signed me up for a project (Feb.) that included fixing cracks, painting, repairing a gate, installing a screen door, etc. He said he would charge me the original "handyman" prices. He postponed the start date, brought one worker who fixed a few cracks, repainted the gate terribly, but ruined a dining room ceiling when his worker used silicone in a tube instead of the expansion tape, spray ceiling covering, and paint I had purchased saying this silicone was "better". Then they said they would have to paint the whole ceiling and charge extra. They left holes in the walls and did a sloppy paint job in several places. I just paid them to get them out of my home as I felt intimidated as a senior citizen who is handicapped. I will try to have the main guy come back when I let him know what I need redone. Don't know if he will come back without charging me more.

Lap marks are those ugly stripes caused by uneven layers of paint buildup. They occur when you roll over paint that’s already partly dry. (In warm, dry conditions, latex paint can begin to stiffen in less than a minute!) The key to avoiding lap marks  when doing DIY wall painting is to maintain a “wet edge,” so each stroke of your roller overlaps the previous stroke before the paint can begin to dry.

Watering down the paint 50%? It will not cover. I am a contract painter and found that most people that I make a contract with immediately try to change the deal and get more than they are paying for. Sometimes, I let them cheat me as they may have other work that I wish to do but other times I put my foot down. I try to get the client to look at what I have done each and everyday if I am going from room to room. I cannot do this If I spray the entire project at once. Even when I have them inspect my work, they often just do not tell the truth and wish to scam me the contractor for more and more while paying the same as the original contract. Most people have not a clue how much work is involved in painting a house and just assume that the painter rolls out the work with no prep, sealing off the place to protect things that are not painted. All of my contracts state that if anything is in the way like babies, dogs, cars, plants and furniture that I cannot proceed and that it is their responsibility to move this stuff. I always seem to be turned into a furniture mover and never get paid to wrench my back. Fact is most people try to rob the contractor and this article tries to make it seem that the contractor is robbing the homeowners. My sister is a prime example of this as she always goes for the lowest bid yet expects a world class job. This means if you pay $500 for a two day paint job do not expect the contractor to live at your home for two weeks and make only $500.
As he has demonstrated through his involvement in the Fort Worth community, he enjoys working with people.  He serves on the worship team and as an elder at his church, has filled many roles in the school’s PTA, and was instrumental in helping to develop a Dads’ Club at the local elementary school which encourages fathers to become more involved in their child’s education.

Those who do hire a professional have every reason to make sure they hire the best one available. Since interior painting projects are often very different from exterior, it makes sense that many companies specialize in one or the other. When discussing your project with prospective contractors, make sure to ask about which type of painting they consider their specialty. You also want to make sure the company you hire was chosen for characteristics other than the bottom-line price. Since painting projects are technically less demanding than other home improvement tasks, there is a much greater chance of running into companies with inadequate experience or poor business practices. For such companies, a low-ball estimate is really the only enticement they can provide. It’s also enough to lure in many homeowners. When entering a painting project (especially an exterior project), hiring a company with a good reputation for service and performance is far preferable to hiring one based on a bargain estimate. The best companies often have to charge a little more to keep good help, equipment in good shape and get the job done right. Remember, if going with a low estimate leaves you with a paint job that fades or chips prematurely, you’re not saving any money at all!
I found Harvey's House Painting when I was looking through paint samples at Sherwin Williams trying to figure out which colors to paint my new home. I had recently purchased an old home in Land Park that needed the interior to be entirely repainted. The previous owner had painted the living room a dark color, telephone boxes in the baseboard, and a wall needed to be floated. I received a couple of bids, and Rich was competitively priced. My time frame was tight; I was moving out of my apartment into my new house and needed to both paint and refinish the hardwood floors. Rich was able to get started earlier, and completed the job quickly but made sure that my concerns were addressed. Rich was on time and professional. My home is less than 1,000 square feet; 2 beds, 1 bath and I wanted three different colors. Prior to painting the rooms, Rich provided two paint samples for each room and after the samples were on the wall, I decided that the two colors for the living room didn't match what I wanted. Rich then provided an additional three paint samples that were closer to my expectations that day. The previous owner's paint job had blemishes; there were bubbles in the previous paint job, and drips of paint that hadn't been wiped up and hardened. Rich's crew sanded down, removed the previous problems, and made the house look great. I went through the house twice, pointed out multiple areas that needed touch up, and wasn't haggled with. During the walk through, I enjoyed that Rich was professional and didn't argue or try to argue about work that was outside the scope of the contract. He explained that an area in the drywall above the doorframe would need to be replaced due to a bad crack in the sheetrock. The lines on the trim are straight, the walls that are dark have clean lines along the crown molding and baseboard the job looks great, the wall that needed to be floated looks awesome and I couldn't be happier. Because I'm refinishing the floors after painting, Rich said he would come back in and touch up the baseboards and any other issues that I would find later down the road. I have a Home Improvement/Painting business, and Angie's List always advertises that that everyone is out to get them. Of course there are people who try to take advantage of homeowners My reputation and repeat business is based on word of mouth. Shoddy work is always a way to get put out of business quick. As far as strictly painting, preparation is a big factor in getting a quality paint job. If you don't prepare the surfaces you are painting you are spinning your wheels, and wasting money, no matter what paint you use. Getting a deposit from a customer is beneficial, but not always necessary. Sometimes it is a godsend, when you get stuck by the customer, which has happened to me more than once

Interview your contractor. Before you choose a contractor, get three bids for comparison and ask the right questions. Bunting says you need to know the following: Do they have proper licenses, insurance, and bonding? Do they subcontract the work out? Do they offer written guarantees of their work? “Recommendations from friends and family are always a good measure,” adds Rance. “And ask for references from previous customers.”
Not all people live where they can hire a painting contractor, like you describe. People who live in small towns can only hire painters who have a very small business, and do two or three paint jobs per week. In this case, you do have to be very careful, when you hire a painter, as we have several, in our area, who are out to make a fast buck anyway they can.

to be the devils advocate i have been a building contractor 20 of the last 30 yrs. i do know that if you go to a higher sheen of paint and or darker colors then any imperfections in the walls will show up much more dramatically…therefore the painter or a good drywall finisher is needed to prepare the walls extensively. this could cause more expenses…for it takes a lot of time to prep walls (smooth walls..not textured walls) and this cost has to be absorbed.
Professional painters provide estimates primarily based on the square footage of your home. Painting an average home between 500 and 1,500 square feet can cost between $1,000 and $3,000. However, factors such as number of stories and ease of access can also affect the overall price. Homeowners report that the average cost to paint a house nationally is $2,581 and most pay between $1,714 and $3,682.

Painters often tint primer close to the color of the top coat, but Wallis thinks that's a recipe for "holidays," or missed spots. Instead, he tints his primer a contrasting color. "If I can see the color coming through, I know I need to apply more paint," he says. On the cottage shown in this story, he chose a gray-blue primer to go under a peach top coat.
"I used Dustin with James Kate roofing after I saw the work his company did on my brother's house. His company is not a fly by the night company, they are strictly professional with high integrity. You may find other roofers that are cheaper but do not provide the same high quality work. I truly believe that Dustin cares about his customers and his employees.Thank you for the best customer service"

I live in Fair Oaks and had my entire 2700+ s.f. home with baseboard/crown molding; ceiling and walls to be painted. A big job. We got 4 different bids with this one making the most sense. The job took a bit longer than (by only 3 days) but admittedly we had a LOT of trim work. The best part and the reason I give them 5 stars - is they showed up on time; kept the area clean and clear..and the guys / crew were the nicest people. Having people in my house for over a week was comfortable. I wasn't there on the final day for the walk through but they came back the next day and finished the minor details and even left me 4 containers (mine) clearly labeled for any touch-ups i have to do in the future (along with the larger unused portions of paint) I highly recommend.

When calculating total cost of your project, one of the most important factors to consider is the paint itself. Paint costs will be determined by the quantity of paint and primer required to complete your project, as well as the quality of the paint you choose. You can use this paint calculator to estimate how much paint you will need.. Once you have an idea what you're working with, go to your local home improvement store and compare the costs of a gallon in person. Painting professionals can also quote average prices from their years of experience working with different paint qualities.
Simple costing techniques, tips on how to survive up against the competition, the big companies with several crews and foremen employed. I don't ever aspire to be that kind of contractor. This is a fresh viewpoint and it gave me so much I am no longer looking for a painter's contracting manual. I found a lot of his times for painting different items to closely match my own.
